A Favorite Christmas Memory

Once upon a time, thirty plus years ago, after we'd moved down to North Carolina, my husband and I were active in the Jaycees and Jaycee wives so we bought a Christmas tree from the Jaycees every year. This one particular year, he'd put it in the garage temporarily till we had time to put it up in the house but we were busy at work and the days were ticking by.

Our sons, Scott and Jeff, who were about 11 and 9 at the time, decided to surprise us and brought it into the living room, put it in the stand, and even decorated it. That was great and we really appreciated it. However, they didn't know you were supposed to saw off the bottom straight, before setting it up in the stand.

We lived in a 2 story house, and every time Scott or Jeff came down the stairs, they liked to jump - when they were about 4 or 5 steps up from the bottom, they would jump down to the hall floor and were always competing to see who could jump the most steps. Well, every time they jumped, they'd jar the floor and the tree in the living room right next to the hall would fall over. About the fourth time Dad had to go into the living room and set the tree back up and straighten up all the ornaments, he'd had it. He took it all down, carried the tree back out to the garage, and sawed it off straight, and brought it back in. We put it back up and decorated it all again, and then it survived the remainder of Christmas season jumps without falling over. It still makes me laugh every time I think about it. :)
